Dalian People’s Square (in simplified Chinese 大连市人民广场) was built in 1914 after the liberation of the Soviet Red Army to commemorate the liberation of Dalian. At that time, the Square was named as the “Stalin Square” and there were the Soviet Red Army Monument for the martyrs there were also some bronze relieves.
In 1993, “Stalin Square” changed its name to “People’s Square”, and in early 1999 a comprehensive transformation was conducted. The Soviet Red Army Monument to the Martyrs was moved to the Soviet Red Army martyrs tomb in Lushun. Then, the former place for the monument was used to build a large musical fountain, occupying the square with total area of 125,000 square meters.
Dalian People’s Square indeed could be called as the administrative and judicial center of Dalian. The surrounding buildings were built during the Russo-Japanese Period, and now they are the offices for Dalian Municipal People’s Government and Dalian Municipal Court, Public Security Bureau and so on.
